Hybrid cars: are they for you?
By Brian Nadel
(April 22, 2005; updated by Wayne Cunningham April 04, 2007)

Hybrids may occupy the garages of many Hollywood celebrities, but regular people find real-world advantages, too. Gas prices fluctuate, but never quite get down as low as they used to be. More people accept the science behind global warming, and want to help save our environment. And many congested metropolitan areas let single occupant hybrids drive in HOV lanes, bypassing freeway gridlock. Hybrids save gas by capturing energy, from braking and coasting, which would otherwise be wasted. That energy is converted to electricity and used to power the car, reducing emissions. To help you decide whether to make a hybrid your next car (or truck or SUV), we've explored the ins and outs of this technology, then checked out the hybrid models currently on the market and those just around the bend.
