Green buildings for the rest of us

This is a portable solar power. I definitely recommend solar chargers. But I wouldn't necessarily recommend this exact product to everyone.

On the left is a 6.5-watt solar panel from Global Solar Energy that's for charging portable devices like cell phones, iPods, or GPS units. It works great for that. But what if you need to charge your phone at night? Hence, the battery, a PowerPack from Xantrex. The PowerPack has a cigarette-lighter attachment as well as a normal electrical outlet plug, so you can run most anything off it (though big electricity hogs like large air conditioners can't be run off it for long). Of course, it will provide backup power during an outage, jump-start your car, and pump up your tires.

But it's not highly portable. Instead, there are many solar chargers for gadgets, many of which come with integrated storage.
