EPEAT, short for the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, is a newcomer to electronics eco-labels and is coming soon to online stores. In addition to including Energy Star-certified products, EPEAT's bronze, silver, and gold levels (see directory) mark computers and printers that are easy to take apart and recycle, have minimal toxic chemicals, and are wrapped in less wasteful packaging. The federal government requires all agencies to buy equipment approved by EPEAT, which is run by the nonprofit Green Electronics Council.
