After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, sales skyrocketed for gas masks. However, they are likely inoperable and best suited for costumes. Cable said an extra-small mask for babies looks extra creepy.

Because some items sold, such as lab beakers and green lasers, could potentially be used in illegal ways, Cable said the company has complied with subpoenas and visits from law enforcement officials, including those from the Department of Homeland Security. High insurance costs drove American Science & Surplus to stop selling lab chemicals even before 2001.
